FLCreatives Happy Hour #66 at Orlando Fringe Beer Tent

Sat, 05/05/2012 - 02:11
May 21 2012 6:00p - 9:00p Link:  Orlando Fringe Festival Link:  RSVP on Facebook

The Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival is one of the most anticipated and creatively freewheeling events we have in Orlando, and our May happy hour has always taken place under their sacred Beer Tent. Your beer money all goes to support this non-profit festival and make sure independent theatre has a place to grow and thrive every year.

Usually we hang out under the beer tent for a little while and take advantage of the food trucks parked on the green lawn (bring cash), and follow that up with a show or two at the festival.

Some shows I am suggesting that have some appeal to Florida Creatives:

  • Connected at 5:45
  • Scientist Turned Comedian at 7:30
  • Medicine at 11:00

There are tons of great shows, and probably several you would like to see if you check out the complete list, so please don't hesitate to make a suggestion (take a look at Page 8 of this PDF for the Monday schedule).

What?

Join Orlando's longest-running creative meetup to celebrate our 5th year of bringing likeminded people together. You can get great benefits out of meeting new people, like stimulating your brain, having a safe (non-judgemental) place to talk shop, finding someone to help you build that next startup, or just making friends.

About FLCreatives Happy Hour

Whether you're a poet, an actor, a photographer, a producer, a marketer, a programmer, an entrepreneur or a combination of them all, you'll find some great conversation and new friends by attending, and coming back every month on the third Monday.

Hilary Mason: Social Data for Social Good

Tue, 04/24/2012 - 10:41
May 06 2012 1:30p Link:  Official Event Page & RSVP Link:  About Hilary Mason

Social data is exploding and scientists, like Hilary, are gaining new insights into human behavior. But how can we use this data to create something meaningful? How can all of us - scientists, developers, artists, and other innovators - work together to build tools or products that make the world more productive, interesting and beautiful?

Join 501c3 Urban ReThink for an inspirational day with a leading creative mind. May 6th, 2012 at 1:30pm at Urban ReThink, 625 E Central Blvd. There will be a special luncheon at noon before the talk for sponsors of the event. See Urban ReThink for sponsor opportunities.

Watch these awesome videos:

Hilary Mason is a computer scientist with a background in machine learning, data mining, and web applications. She is the scientist at Bit.ly, where she learns things from vast amounts of data. She is widely published and regularly speaks at academic and industry conferences, and recently realized her dream of delivering a talk on algorithms while drinking a dry ice martini. She is an enthusiastic developer and often releases code on her personal site, www.hilarymason.com. She has discovered two new species, loves to bake cookies, and asks way too many questions.

Urban ReThink is a creative and collaborative hub located in Orlando's historic Thornton Park. By day, enterprising professionals in diverse fields from the arts to technology work here. By night and on weekends, we welcome the community with a “What will I discover today?” assortment of talks, workshops, and gatherings. We are part of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Urban Think! Foundation which supports local educational, creative, and cultural opportunities.

Visualize the pits and grooves of a song

Thu, 04/19/2012 - 19:44

While researching a new local podcast with creative interviews I came across the following awesomeness, supposedly coded to work in a web browser:

Musical spectrum analysis from Jon-Kyle on Vimeo.

A musical tone consists of multiple overlapping sine-waves oscillating at varying rates. This motion graphic represents the isolated frequencies and rhythmic patterns of Ryan York's “If I Am This Forest”. Of particular interest is the swell beginning at 0:45, and multiple simultaneous frequencies which form the single melodic vocal line at 2:05.

You can purchase If I Am This Forest, which I designed the packaging for, by visiting http://nonprojects.net

Prepare your BarCamp Session

The 5th BarCampOrlando will be on April 14th at the Voxeo and Code School / EnvyLabs offices on Orange Avenue. Many of the best BarCamp sessions require little to no preparation, while others prefer to prepare slides or talking points. Sometimes you just want someone to bounce ideas off of.

Show up any time throughout the day. At Beer O'Clock (or 4pm, whichever comes first), we will stop our "Bacon-making" work and start planning BarCamp sessions.

We may also end up discussing the idea of holding semi-monthly or quarterly mini-BarCamp events at Urban ReThink. See this post for a brainstorm: http://floridacreatives.com/podcast/florida-creatives/flcreatives-33-tec...

HealthCamp Florida 2012

Mon, 04/02/2012 - 18:32
Apr 27 2012 8:00a - 4:30p Link:  HealthCamp Florida Link:  RSVP on EventBrite

HealthCamp Florida is bringing together the amazing people that create The Remarkable Innovations that Are Transforming Health Care

HealthCamp Orlando will be a different kind of meeting, often called an unconference, whereby participants who wish to present come prepared to speak about a topic of interest.  As such, an unconference does not have the usual type of pre-planned speakers.  The topics and presenters will represent various aspects of the Health Care industry and, for this event, will focus on Technology, Process and Policy as discussion areas for innovation. The event will offer inspiring moments and showcase the remarkable innovations and people who are transforming Health Care.

The LAN.  The Learning and Action Network.

Everyone has knowledge that can contribute to better care.  The Learning and Action Network (LAN) encourages physicians, other health care providers and community stakeholders to work together to turn challenges into opportunities and harness the power of a 24/7 community for improving healthcare.  The LAN explores innovative strategies for transforming care delivery while sharing tools, methods, lessons learned and resources.  Participants are among the first to know about improvements, innovations, and practical knowledge that can be used in their practices and communities.

Who Should Attend

This event for is for anyone who is interested in innovations in health care and would like to get together and share their knowledge.

  • Health innovators, entrepreneurs, related inventors and early adopters in health care.
  • Health policy experts and executives in health-related industries that expect to be impacted by innovations:
  • Insurance companies
  • Hospitals
  • Health care facilities
  • Pharmaceutical companies
  • Medical device manufacturers
  • Health Practitioners
  • Doctors
  • Nurses
  • Office staff
  • Medical students

The Event.  It's all about the schedule.

Unlike traditional meetings, HealthCamp’s agenda is set in the morning with a blank schedule.  It is then filled up by attendees that want to do a presentation.  Facilitators help fill in times and room locations for the presenters.  The LAN combines both a traditional format with lots of opportunities for networking and conversations.  Don’t be surprised if during the day someone wishes to gather a group together for a spontaneous discussion.  Attendees check the board for topics of interest and plan their day. Participants will use methods such as online interaction, social media and peer-to-peer education to foster an all teach, all learn environment.

Likemind.orl

Mon, 04/02/2012 - 18:00
Apr 20 2012 8:00a - 11:00a Link:  Likemind Orlando at UrbanReThink Link:  RSVP on Facebook

Likemind is before work (8AM), it happens downtown, and everyone is welcome. Bring a few friends, get some coffee, and tell us what's on your mind. We've been having some healthy turnout in the past few months. If you're getting something out of this event, please invite some friends. Since Urban ReThink is open now, and the Virgin Olive Market is serving coffee and food, let's meet up in Thornton Park. Street parking is abundant, so I don't want to hear any parking complaints. Also, meeting in downtown is part of the spirit of this event. Groups in 60+ other cities all over the world will be getting together for conversations with their community - sure, they may not have 2+ years of these events behind them, but we do. More than 3 years ago, I heard about these two marketing guys / geeks from New York who had started an event they held on Friday mornings for coffee and conversation. The first few were just the two of them, but as they invited people and the word got out, it grew until it started getting on the radar all over the world. Now Likemind happens in scores of cities on every continent, and Orlando has been on that list almost since the beginning.

You show up, I'll buy coffee and breakfast. Just like the old days. We are also open to having sponsors for the refreshments. Leave a comment below. Please twitter about it, grow the community, talk it up, put it on your calendar, and help Orlando leave a wake on it's way sailing to the top of the world.

This month the fine Falcons from Thornton Park actually requested our presence. I think that might be the first time a venue reached out to us! This place has an art gallery vibe, and is in the best neighborhood (I think so, at least).

This month's happy hour is also just days after BarCamp Orlando, which got started at one of our original Likemind meetups back in the day!

Creativity Groups

Fri, 03/09/2012 - 09:42

I'm not one to do any organizing, but, can we try setting up some "happy hours" or such in this part of the world?  I'm in Naples, myself.

I'm between jobs right now so pretty much an open schedule and trying to keep the motivation going.  A get together with other creative people can generate new ideas and/or opporunities and certainly keep me falling into a rut.

Any thoughts from the SWFL group?

Fri, 03/02/2012 - 11:13
Mar 04 2012 4:30p - 6:30p Link:  Phlier Photography Link:  RSVP Link:  Phlier Calendar

A Photo Walk is when a group of people get together to walk around together taking pictures. This photo walk is being created specifically for those that LOVE Instagram, a popular iPhone app for taking and sharing photos.

Phlier's Insagram Photo Walk will start at a location (TBD) in downtown Orlando and end in the same location. When the walk is done, everyone is welcome to hangout and get to know each other. The starting and ending place will be somewhere that we all can relax, have something to eat/drink.

If you are interested in attending, please fill out the contact form and send us your contact info. See you all soon!

Phlier is not a business.  It’s purpose is to connect people to each other through common interests.  By finding those that have a passion for certain activities, we want to help connect them to others who share that same interest and support the community as it grows.  We are located in Central Florida and the idea of Phlier came through a group of us that moved here and wanted to find connections.  The people involved in Phlier groups love being active, having fun, and living life.  We enjoy challenging each other as well as learning from each other.  We are professionals, we are friends and we all love living in community.

Phlier is currently in the beginning phases as a few of us continue to look for people interested in leading groups based on what they’re passionate about.  If you are interested in leading a group and would like more information, visit out contact page and send us your contact info along with the best time to call.   Thanks for visiting!
